Why is Handmade So Expensive?

You want to be healthy, unique and trendy. I know, me too. But… Why is Handmade So Expensive?!

I am myself an artist. When I create something, it’s one of a kind and I’ve put so much love in it that I often can’t part with it that easily. Once you sell an original drawing that you love so much, you can only see it in photographs. Maybe that’s why I like digital art so much. But that’s another story. We should put a fair price for the effort we’ve put into creating something handmade. It doesn’t always have to be an artwork or a sculpture. There are lots of toiletries (such as lotions, candles, cosmetics, various treatments), clothes or furniture that are handmade. It’s not easy to do it and it takes knowledge but if you want customers, then I guess you should make your goods affordable enough for them.

Handmade items on Etsy

I am an Etsy-an but I need to be honest here and confirm that most handmade items are way overpriced. The website is great, it’s designed very nicely and covers the needs of everyone. I’d never argue with that. As a person owning an Etsy shop, I do realise how hard it is to build your skills, reach certain level and finally get the courage to start selling your creatings.

Everything handmade definitely goes to the “things that are too expensive” category for the simple reason that handing your loved one a one of a kind present makes them feel exceptional. But is it always worth the strangely high fee? Could you not just buy it from the store and hand it out with style? I too share the opinion that we, Etsy-ans, should keep it real when it comes to prices. Well, I’m definitely not Etsy’s best seller and if I was, I’d probably think different. What I’m trying now is to think as a buyer. All sellers or merchants are customers at some other situation. That’s why I try to maintain reasonable prices. I am no Picasso or Dali and I don’t think that we should all think about ourselves as being absolutely underpaid for the art we do.

If you are good at what you are doing, you would always have clients and feel appreciated for the work you do. Selling yourself is not easy, it’s another skill that one should acquire, but there’s so much information out there that you need to be so ignorant not to search for it.

About Kremi

Hello everyone! My name is Kremi and welcome to my blog about cycling and all the other stuff that come up to my mind in the meanwhile! This is something I’ve wanted to do for such a long time now, to share my cycling experiences and emotions with you. I had never really thought that cycling would bring me this much joy and feeling of freedom. What was I doing until now really? But better start late than never after all. Anyway, I often go on day trips with the local cycling groups to explore the sights nearby. It’s ofter in a over 50 km range, which turns into a good exercise too:) You will often see me post pictures from my solo trips, when I usually stop somewhere nice and quite and do some reading or drawing (my other two ever so ovely and favorite hobbies). So stay tuned and I’ll be more than happy to hear back from you too!
